Notice of Unplanned Outage

We have experienced another DDoS attack. Here is the description from NERO, our ISP…

NERO is experiencing DDoS activity against customers in Eugene and Corvallis. There have been multiple high packet and bandwidth attacks, beginning approximately 19:00 this evening and going up to the present, 20:15. NERO is taking actions to mitigate as necessary to minimize impact on customer traffic.

Wireless Maintenance Complete

The scheduled maintenance on the wireless network is now complete.

All users of the “OSU_Access” wifi network will once again be required to authenticate before gaining wifi access.

Access is allowed in the following two ways:

-if your wifi device is registered in Maintain, you will be allowed to access the OSU_Access wifi network without requiring a login. -if your wifi devices is not registered, you will need to open a web browser, and will be redirected to a login page. You need to login using your ONIC username and password.

ONID Shell Server Outage Saturday January 10th 9:45am – 10:15am

The ONID shell server (shell.onid.oregonstate.edu) was not accepting new SSH connections between 9:45am and 10:15am on Saturday January 10th. The outage was caused by an error while adding new network ranges to the block list. The block list is used to prevent connections from malicious network addresses that are trying to guess passwords for ONID users.

Drupal Outage

On Sunday Jan. 11, 2015, CWS will be doing maintenance on the Drupal MySQL servers between 7:30 am and 8:00 am. During this time the service may be down for 5 to 10 minutes. While it is down, the most commonly accessed Drupal production pages will be served from the caching system. Users requesting pages that are not cached will be presented with an “offline for maintenance” message. Administrative functionality will not be available during this time.

NERO will be performing maintenance on the Medford Hub router this Friday, January 9th, 2015 between 0400-0600. We are installing new hardware to allow for future customer growth in the region.

NERO will work to minimize impact to operational traffic. Customers may experience brief interruptions during the maintenance window.

Emergency Maintenance of New Core Firewall

Due to a bug in the current version of code on the new core firewall blades, an emergency upgrade was performed this morning at 7 am. There was no outage as redundancy measures were used.

Emergency Maintenance Exchange

Good afternoon,

Tonight the IS Server Support team will performing emergency maintenance on one of the Exchange servers at 10PM to increase the service’s resources.

We do not expect this maintenance to cause an outage. However some users may notice during the maintenance window that they are disconnected and reconnected as the mailboxes are migrated off and back to the default mailbox servers.

An expected and normal message during this timeframe would be “The Microsoft Exchange Administrator has made a change that requires you quit and restart Outlook.”

Who will this affect: All SharePoint users When will this happen: Tuesday – 12-30-2014 @ 10:00PM – 11:00PM What are we doing: Adding memory resources Why are we doing this: Addressing performance issues with growing utilization on the Exchange Server farm.

Campus wide network issues overnight

Starting at approximately 3:30am this morning, Information Services saw network issues indicating that one of our core building uplink switches was crashing. This meant that all buildings connected to that switch (roughly half of campus) would have seen intermittent service loss. The last service issue was reported as resolved at 5:35am and staff has been on site to replace the failing components. We will continue to monitor the situation and will send follow up notifications if we expect or experience any more service disruptions.

MyOSU Login Difficulties Resolved

The login issues with the myOSU portal have been resolved. One of the portal servers reached a session limit, causing it to temporarily reject new connections.

ONID Outage Monday December 15th 11:20am – noon

An internal MySQL database server hung, causing the following ONID services to be unavailable from 11:20am to noon:

– ONID Webmail (https://webmail.oregonstate.edu) – MyONID website (ONID Password changes, ONID Sign-Up) – ONID SSO (the old SSO system, not CAS) – Cacti graphs (http://cacti.onid.oregonstate.edu)

The root cause is still under investigation.

Outage for federation services

A set of secondary authentication certificates expired overnight on Federation.oregonstate.edu affecting Office 365 web logins and Kumo. The certificate has been replaced and service has been restored. The outage was from 1:01AM-8:46AM, Today 12/12/2014. This does not affect OneDrive for Business application, installed office, OneNote or other applications installed to devices; but purely the interactive login page for office 365, and kumo.
