OSU network outage corrected

Colleagues,

The OSU network experienced an outage today that lasted from approximately 12-noon to 12:35PM Network Engineers have been working on the problem, and the network is stable again.

At this point, the root cause appears to be a failed module in one of the core devices, and a failover that did not complete. Network Operations is continuing to monitor devices to make sure the network remains available.

NFS configuration mod

On August 4, 2016 at 5:00PM, we will modify the configuration of flat file NFS mounts to Oracle database and job servers. This change will shift the resolution of user and group names from the client systems to the NetApp storage device in order to allow user accounts to belong to more than 16 groups. In testing, this change should be transparent and requires no service interruption. After making this change, we will verify that file access has been successfully altered. The change can be quickly reversed if issues appear.

Banner INB, Banner Self Service, Banner Workflow, Appworx, BRM, and Nolij will be unavailable August 6th from 12:01am through 5:00pm.

Banner Outage – July 30, 2016 !2:10am-8:21am

Colleagues,

Banner experienced a problem with database availability beginning at 12:10am on Saturday, July 30, 2016 and was restored to service at 8:21am. The outage originated when the weekly backup scripts ran into authentication challenges with the introduction of the Duo Multi-Factor Authentication software. While the servers and databases were still up they remained in restricted mode. To Banner users this would appear as if Banner were down. Efforts are underway to correct the backup scripts to ensure this doesn’t reoccur.

Public Folders Disruption

Public Folders Disruption

Good Afternoon,

General Information: The Microsoft Exchange Public Folders experienced issues related to a recovery that did not behave as intended. Customers may have experienced issues attempting to open, update, or delete items within the Exchange Public Folders area beginning around 11:45am. Customers may have received some unexpected messages from pfRecovery as part of this outage. We are in the process of restoring the Exchange Public Folders.

Technical Information: At 11:45am several of you may have received a message from pfRecovery indicating that one of your meetings/e-mails/contacts was in conflict. This was due to a recovery that we were performing on what was believed to be an isolated server. The process was immediately stopped to prevent further messages from being sent to customers and further investigation into the cause began. The recovery process appears to have interacted with the production Public Folders negatively and we are in the process of bringing restoring them from last night’s backup.

Our apologies for the disruption and for the unexpected cryptic messages customers may have received. We will send out an updated note when the restore has been completed.

Oracle Optimization Parameter Change

On July 6 2016 we will be removing an optimization parameter (_unnest_subquery) in Oracle production databases, returning to the baseline configuration. This parameter was originally set to FALSE to address a bug in earlier versions of Oracle that caused certain database queries to run slowly. The bug does not exist in the version of Oracle we are currently running. Removing the parameter will make certain types of queries run more quickly, and be otherwise unnoticeable.

This change can be made (and reversed) with no interruption to service. The update was made to the development databases a month ago, and the ECS and CORE team programmers approve of the change.
