The Student Computing Facilities (SCF) serves the computing needs of OSU students, staff, and faculty. We maintain over 1000 computers located in one general use facilities (Milne), four computer classrooms (LAMC, Kidder 28, Milne 201, Milne 130), and various department labs around campus. We staff our general use facility (Milne) 24 hours a day. The majority of our computers are Windows XP/7 workstations, but we do support over 400 Macintosh computers running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) through 10.7 (Lion).

Our student workers are responsible for staffing our main computer facilities and assist customers with questions concerning the hardware and software installed there. Questions can range from assisting our customers with setting up their account to helping find a needed feature in a computer program. They also perform basic maintenance to the equipment, perform cleaning duties such as wiping workstations and dusting, and keep a welcoming academic environment for our customers.

We expect our staff to have good customer service skills, basic knowledge of Windows XP or 7 and/or Macintosh OS X, knowledge of our popular software packages (MS Office, web browsers, email, etc) and knowledge of our equipment (printers and scanners). Knowledge of software used in our classrooms is a plus. Our staff comes from various academic backgrounds including Liberal Arts, Engineering, Business, and HHS. This position does not require any programming or system administration skills. Starting pay rate is $8.80 per hour (graveyard shifts are paid 50 cents extra per hour), and we ask that everyone work at least 8 hours a week.

Interview:

Our interviews are informal where we get to know you and find out what you would do in some situations that you may come across while working in our computer facilities. You will also be able to ask us any questions you may have about the position. You welcome to bring a resume, but its not required.

Employment Test:

The test asks 50 questions about computer hardware, software and peripherals (scanners, printers, etc). You will be also asked a few questions about SCF and OSU's computer polices, and about the accounts a student may use while at our computer lab. You can take the test before or after your interview time. You don't need to bring anything to the test, and food and drink are not allowed in the testing area.

Requirements

Must meet current student enrollment eligibility and be familiar with Windows and/or Macintosh computers. Able to interact with users in a helpful friendly manner, i.e. strong communication skills are required as well. Successful applicants should be able to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a professional attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Perform periodic routine maintenance on the computers, printers, and other facility equipment, reporting any damage or malfunctions.
  • Clean various facility equipment. (vacuum printers, wipe monitors, keyboards and mice, dust, clean desktops and other surfaces)
  • Software: Knowledge of a basic software programs, i.e.,
    • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Graphics Programs, and Scanning Software (picture/text)
    • Basic file management on Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS 10.6 and some UNIX
    • Internet applications (ftp, SSH, web browser, and email clients)
  • Be familiar with the ONID system we use in our computer facilities is helpful.
  • To aid users with any problems/questions they may have concerning software, hardware, or the facility policies.
  • Assist users with multimedia and storage technologies (scanner, Zip drive, USB Drives, Video Editors, CD/DVD burners)
  • Have a basic understanding of Microsoft networks and what to do when problems occur.
  • Guide physically challenged students with the Adaptive technology, Braille printer, Dictation software, Speech augmented scanner and Screen enlarging technologies.
  • To know the differences between Laser printers and Inkjets and what to do when a printer malfunctions.
  • Trouble shoot any problems users may encounter with hardware or software.
  • To maintain a comfortable learning environment by making sure those who disrupt the environment are taken care of accordingly.
