In order to prevent conflicts with past, current, and future ONID usernames, IAM is enforcing the following naming policy.

Definition:

  • ONID Username Namespace: 1-8 alpha-numeric characters

Examples:

  • "tstuser1" - This username is IN the ONID Username Namespace
  • "tst_user" - This username is NOT IN the ONID Username Namespace
  • "tst.user" - This username is NOT IN the ONID Username Namespace
  • "longusername" - This username is NOT IN the ONID Username Namespace

Policy:

  • Active Directory administrators SHALL NOT create users or groups with a samAccountName (pre-Windows 2000 username) in the ONID Username Namespace.
  • Exchange administrators SHALL NOT create SMTP email addresses in the @oregonstate.edu domain with a local-part in the ONID Username Namespace.

If you need an exception to this policy, please contact IAM at [email protected].

NOTE: Active Directory does not contain the complete list of ONID usernames.  The username/address you request may not be available, even though you cannot find a conflict in Active Directory.
