Preparing For Your Session

UIT Media Hub studios are designed similar to OSU's classrooms, featuring familiar, easy-to-use podium technology and interfaces. To ensure the best experience possible, here are some tips to help you prepare for your visit.

  • Make sure your digital teaching content, i.e. Powerpoint, Excel, graphics or other presentation materials have been designed & are accessible via USB drive or cloud storage, such as Box.
  • If you're working from physical materials, please bring printouts and pens/pencils/paper with you.

Having a good command of what you want to create and a sense of how you will create it is probably the most important aspect of creating media. Here's a few things to consider:

  • If you have a script or storyboard, great! If not, be sure to practice a few times to make the most of your recording time in the studio.
  • Do you have an outline, strategy and/or process for using the studio technology at Media Hub?  If not, let's setup an orientation to help you get familiar with our tools, software and recording options.
  • If you're using bits of your own equipment like a laptop, audio recorder or other technology, check with us first to ensure it's compatible with our systems.
  • Pre-planning helps ensure the media you create is easy to work with and requires the least amount of post-production as possible. *Advanced users may desire a more flexible editing environment - we can accommodate that as well!

If you're planning to record yourself using the video camera, what you wear is important. Here's a few things worth considering:

  • Stick to Solids. Big patterns are too distracting. Remember, the focus should be on your content, not your outfit. Alternately, small, tight patterns can "buzz" on camera.
  • Keep Jewelry & Accessories Simple. Dangly jewelry isn’t just visually distracting; it’s loud. Microphones will pick up your bangle bracelets or jangly earrings. Stick to studs and forgo the bracelets.
  • Using the GreenScreen? Avoid wearing green or you'll disappear into whatever content your sharing.
  • Keep it Simple & Classic. Classic styles look good on camera and can keep your video feeling current years down the road.
  • Avoid Over-Accessorizing. Stay away from things like scarves, hats and other unnecessary accessories. They can interfere with audio and lighting, resulting in less-than-adequate results.

Be prepared with a media plan for saving and sharing your recordings. Here's a few tips:

  • Files are recorded in .mp4 or .mp3 format to SD cards on Media Hub systems and you'll want to consider how you'd like to take ownership of them
  • If you're sharing your media in Canvas or online, Kaltura is great solution for storing and sharing your content
  • OSU's cloud storage tool Box is also a good way to retrieve your media
  • USB drives are another option, but may present file size capacity limitations
  • Media recordings create large file sizes and may require extended processing - plan for extra time after your session for file transferring
